Our Approach
New students at CDS, ages 3 through 7, are placed in age-appropriate classes, where they enjoy music-accompanied creative movement consistent with their developmental skills. Classes for the younger girls and boys are based on the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus.
Classical ballet training, based on the Kirov syllabus, begins with Ballet 1 usually at age eight, when students attend two classes per week. Ballet levels 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 follow. More classes are required at each successive level. Pointe work is introduced during ballet level 3 after students have achieved sufficient levels of technique and strength.
Ballet students in levels 7 through 10, the most advanced, attend a minimum of four classes per week. Student performance opportunities are offered throughout the year. A December production of The Nutcracker includes students from pre-primary 2 through ballet 10. The Spring Benefit Concert features students in ballet levels 4 – 10. The June Dance Concert includes students from primary level, all ballet levels, modern dance, and jazz.
In addition to pre-professional ballet training, CDS also offers recreational dance classes for the once-a-week student in ballet, modern dance and jazz. Summer programs offer classes in multiple disciplines, including Flamenco, mime, theater dance, choreography, partnering, modern, crafts, Pilates and yoga. Adult ballet classes are ongoing throughout the school year.
"Having two daughters who have been at CDS since they were little, I have been able to witness such a growth of self-esteem and empowerment."
